Local Connecticut Resident Receives ‘Pepsi Refresh’ Grant to Benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association

James Lacerenza, a 24 year-old resident of Stamford, Conn., helps make a difference for children fighting neuromuscular disease with a grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project, which funds ideas that refresh and improve the community worldwide.

Lacerenza placed eighth out of fifteen in the $10,000 tier of the Pepsi competition. The grant will benefit MDA’s New York Summer Camp program, where children with neuromuscular disease can enjoy outdoor activities adapted to meet their needs.

It costs $800 for one child to attend camp. The Association covers this cost, so the family does not incur any expenses. The grant will allow 11 children to attend MDA Summer Camp for free.

The Pepsi Refresh Project selects winners based on the number of votes a given idea receives. Contestants use social media websites, Pepsi products, and other promotional tactics to gain votes. This is Lacerenza’s fourth time competing in the Pepsi Refresh Project.

“We had tremendous help from MDA friends and supporters at the International Association of Firefighters, The Arizona Diamondbacks, World Wrestling Entertainment, Kohl's, Garden Catering - the list of people is endless,” said Lacerenza.

Over the years, Lacerenza has raised $107,833 for MDA Summer Camp through various fundraisers and support from the public. His efforts have allowed approximately 130 children attend camp free of charge.

In 1999, Lacerenza began volunteering with MDA in the Hawthorne, N.Y. District Office. He is the founder of the ConnectiKids Summer Camp Fund, an organization dedicated to sending children with neuromuscular disease to MDA Summer Camp in New York.

Today, Lacerenza fundraises for the Association, volunteers annually at the local MDA Labor Day Telethon and organizes the Shamrocks Against Dystrophy campaign in his local area.

N.J. Business Leaders Raise "Bail" for Westfield Lock-Up

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) will send local business leaders to “jail” on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at The Jolly Trolley in Westfield, N.J. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise “bail” for MDA.

MDA will “lock-up” community business leaders and arrest them at their place of business. Transportation will be provided by local police departments to The Jolly Trolley, located at 411 North Ave E, Westfield, NJ 07090.

Each “jailbird” will raise $1,600 in the weeks leading up to the event, then visit the “jailhouse” to turn in their bail, enjoy MDA’s version of “gourmet bread and water” otherwise known as lunch, and have the opportunity to network with colleagues and friends. The $1,600 bail benefits funding for MDA’s week-long overnight camp, in Spring Valley, N.Y., for children ages 6-17, served by The Association. MDA aims to raise at least $50,000 from the event.

Business leaders from Westfield, Fanwood, Plainfield, South Plainfield, Clark, Cranford, and Kenilworth are invited to participate.

CT Business Leaders Get "Locked Up" in West Hartford

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) will send local business leaders to “jail” on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Rizzuto’s Wood-Fired Kitchen & Bar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to raise “bail” for MDA.

MDA will “lock-up” community business leaders and arrest them at their place of business. They will be transported by “undercover officers” to Rizzuto’s Kitchen & Bar, located at 111 Memorial Road, West Hartford, CT 06107.

Rizzuto’s Kitchen & Bar will serve the “jailbirds” complimentary “jail” food, while each attempts to raise at least $2,400 in bail money by contacting friends, family members and business colleagues for donations to MDA. Money raised will support MDA Summer Camp by paying for sponsorships and cabins to house children. It costs $800 for one child to be sent to camp. Jailbirds that reach their “bail” goal will send three children to camp with all expenses paid.

Participants will be asked to serve time at Rizzuto’s in one-hour increments, starting at 11 a.m. and the last hour beginning at 2 p.m. The “jailbirds” are encouraged to spend more time “locked up” if desired. There will be contests and prizes each hour. Jailbirds will have their mug shot taken and interact with other business and community leaders attending the event in support of MDA’s mission. They will also have the opportunity to meet an individual or family served by the Association.

A wide variety of businesses will send jailbirds to go behind bars for MDA, including Private Capital Group, University of Hartford, Sovereign Bank, West Hartford Public Schools, American School for the Deaf, Connecticut Bank & Trust, and more.

TSI Harley-Davidson Holds 14th Annual Black and Blue Ball

TSI Harley-Davidson will hold their 14th annual Black and Blue Ball in South Windsor, Conn. on Friday, October 14, 2011 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

The benefit will be held at Maneeley’s Banquet Facility, located on 65 Rye Street, South Windsor, Conn, starting at 6 p.m. The night will start with a cocktail reception and hor d’oeurvres. Guests can bid at the live, silent camp auction. An award ceremony and honoree recognition will follow. Entertainment will be provided and hosted by Fox 61 and WCCC.

The Black and Blue Ball has raised in excess of $500,000 over the past nine years. In 2010, the Ball raised more than $50,000. This year, corporate and individual tables are available. Responses for attendance are requested by September 30, 2011.

Money raised will support MDA Summer Camp, by paying for sponsorships and cabins to house children. The various levels of sponsorship range from summer camp sponsor, which costs $800 for one child to be sent to camp for free, up to a title sponsor, costing $5,000 to support MDA. This level includes two tables for ten with preferred seating, complimentary drink package, business advertisement, a plaque presentation, and recognition to the public.

The event’s name originates from MDA’s longstanding relationship with Harley-Davidson. Early participants arrived in “black” leather and “blue” denim. Today, the Black and Blue Ball is a highlight among the area’s social events, drawing individuals and companies from across Connecticut and western Massachusetts together on the road to a cure for neuromuscular disease.

Kelly's Kone Konnection in Connecticut Names 2 Flavors in Honor of MDA

Kelly Stone of Kelly’s Kone Konnection generously named two ice cream flavors for MDA to help promote the 2011 MDA Labor Day Telethon. This is the fourth consecutive year that Kelly’s Kone Konnection has named flavors to help MDA’s mission.

Members of the local Hamden, Conn. community can now enjoy the special edition flavors “Make a Mocha Chip Muscle” and “MDA Raising More Cookie Dough” during the month of August at Kelly’s Kone Konnection, located at 2583 Whitney Ave. in Hamden, Conn.

Kelly’s Kone Konnection’s support in helping MDA promote the Telethon will increase viewership in the Hamden area, which will in turn help local families and individuals affected by neuromuscular disease.

The 2011 MDA Labor Day Telethon will broadcast during Labor Day Weekend on Sept. 4 from the Mohegan Sun Casino on Fox61 WTIC. Contributions to the Telethon will help fund diagnostic and follow-up care for people with muscular dystrophy, assistance with the purchase and repair of wheelchairs and leg braces, physical, occupational and respiratory therapy consultations, assistance with the purchase of communication devices, medical and scientific conferences and much more. Other services include support groups and MDA’s Annual Summer Camp for children with neuromuscular diseases.

A&P Family of Supermarkets Gets "Locked Up" on the Hudson

A&P Family of Supermarkets, among other local businesses, will support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) by getting locked up on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the Wicked Wolf Tavern in Hoboken, N.J. to raise “bail” for MDA.

John Bincoletto of A&P Family of Supermarkets in Hoboken is a repeat offender for the 2011 Lock Up on the Hudson. In 2010, he raised $2,300 and will be participating again this year. A&P Family of Supermarkets has also supported MDA in the Shamrock Against Dystrophy program. The Hoboken location raised over $9,500.

Waterbury Fire Department Holds Annual Softball Tournament

The Waterbury Fire Department Local 1339 will host their annual Softball Tournament on Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21, 2011 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

The tournament features 13 men’s teams on Saturday and 13 Co-Ed teams on Sunday. The event will be held at Buck’s Hill Park, located at 88 Montoe Road in Waterbury, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day.

Registration will occur until a week prior to the event for $275 per team. Trophies will be awarded for first through fourth place teams, along with other prizes. Plaques will be given to all that participate.

The tournament will benefit the Waterbury Fire Department’s Fill the Boot campaign for MDA. In 2010, the tournament raised about $6,500 to benefit Waterbury’s efforts for MDA.

Fill the Boot drives collect donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease nationwide. All proceeds benefit MDA’s services, research programs, and support groups that benefit individuals and families in the local area.
The Waterbury Fire Department kicked off their fill effort this past weekend at the Brass City Mall and Stop & Shop Plaza. They will continue filling Fridays and Saturdays throughout August.

Southbury Training School Local S15 Fills the Boot This Weekend

The Southbury Training School Local S15 will be filling the boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) from Thursday, August 11 to Saturday, August 13, 2011 in Southbury, Conn.

Local S15 will collect donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease at the Southbury Training School, located at 1461 S Britain Rd, Southbury, Conn., 06488, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday and 6 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday.

On Saturday, August 13, members will fill the boot at the K-Mart Plaza, located at 100 Main Street North, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Funds raised go to the Association to support summer camp, research, and programs within the community.

East Longmeadow Local 2426 Fills the Boot for MDA

The East Longmeadow Fire Department Local 2426 will fill the boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Fire fighters will volunteer their time to collect donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease at the Rotary in East Longmeadow, Mass.

In 2010, the East Longmeadow Fire Department raised $10,000 for the Association. Over the past eight years, they have raised approximately $65,000 to benefit MDA.

All of the proceeds will go towards MDA’s services, research programs, and support groups that benefit individuals and families in the local area. Funds help send children fighting against neuromuscular disease to MDA Summer Camp.

Local 2426 is a member of The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), which is MDA’s largest national sponsor. Last year, locals throughout the United States raised over $27.6 million to help individuals affected by neuromuscular disease. Since 1954, IAFF members have donated more than $450 million to MDA.

MDA Honors Monroe Resident with Top Achievement Award for Connecticut

The Muscular Dystrophy Association has named Paul Breslawski of Monroe the recipient of its 2011 Robert Ross Personal Achievement Award for Connecticut.

Breslawski, 22, was selected for MDA’s highest achievement award in Connecticut due to his outstanding academic achievements and his dedication and commitment to serving as a role model for others with disabilities.

Breslawski is affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which causes severe muscle weakness and atrophy. He uses a power chair for mobility and has had a cardiac defibrillator implanted to help his heart beat normally.

In May, Breslawski graduated from Sacred Heart University summa cum laude with a degree in political science. He has a strong interest in government and politics, served as an intern in the office of Congressman Jim Himes in Bridgeport in 2009. He also worked on the campaign for Governor Dan Malloy in 2010.

Other notable honors Breslawski received upon graduation include the Gold Medal of Excellence in Political Science and third place in the Writing Across the Curriculum contest for a research paper on Chief Justice Harlan F. Stone in his Constitutional Law course.

Breslawski plans to attend either graduate school to become a social studies teacher, or law school. He credits his family, friends and faith in God with helping him to maintain a positive attitude and keep going, no matter what his muscle disease may throw at him. In addition to politics, Breslawski enjoys video games and rock music.

“It gives me great joy to announce that Paul Breslawski is Connecticut’s Robert Ross MDA Personal Achievement Award recipient for 2011,” said MDA President & CEO Gerald C. Weinberg. “He is a wonderful example of the kind of leadership that people with disabilities contribute to their communities every day.”
About the award

Breslawski was selected as Connecticut’s state award recipient after having been selected for a local award by MDA’s Westchester Area Chapter.

One person will be selected from among all the state honorees around the country and named MDA’s national 2012 Robert Ross Personal Achievement Award recipient.

The award is named in memory of Robert Ross, MDA’s longtime chief executive who died in 2006. Ross created the Personal Achievement Award program in 1992 to recognize the exemplary accomplishments and community service of people who have any of the 40-plus neuromuscular diseases for which MDA seeks treatments and cures.

MDA’s 2011 national award recipient is Thomas Hale Arrington III of Chesapeake, Va. Mr. Arrington is a clean-energy entrepreneur who founded Atlantic Wind Energy, a company that promotes the use of renewable energy. He currently is president of Tidewater Biodiesel, a company that plans to produce fuel from waste vegetable oil. Arrington, 48, has facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

MDA Honors Hope Valley Resident with Top Achievement Award for Rhode Island

The Muscular Dystrophy Association has named Shane Bourque of Hope Valley the recipient of its 2011 Robert Ross Personal Achievement Award for Rhode Island.

Bourque, 19, was selected for MDA’s highest achievement award in Rhode Island for his courageous spirit and outstanding community service in behalf of people with disabilities.

Bourque has Becker muscular dystrophy, which causes muscle weakness and atrophy. He recently finished his first year at Rhode Island College, majoring in journalism and broadcasting. Since receiving his diagnosis at the age of 7, Bourque and his family have been very active in a wide variety of MDA events.

In addition to serving two terms (2004 and 2005) as MDA’s Goodwill Ambassador for Rhode Island, Bourque has been involved with the local broadcast of the MDA Labor Day Telethon, and he and his family were featured nationally during the 2003 Telethon in Los Angeles. Over the years, he has been actively involved in many MDA fundraising events including Shamrock sales and Muscle Walks. He also created a piece of artwork which he donated to the MDA Art Collection.

Connecticut Summer Camp 8/7 - 8/12

Starting Sunday, August 7 to Friday, August 12, 2011, the Muscular Dystrophy Association will host its annual summer camp for children with neuromuscular diseases in Hebron, Connecticut at East Seals Camp Hemlocks. Camp Hemlocks serves campers throughout the entire state, including Hartford, New Haven, Litchfield, New London, Tolland, and Fairfield counties, and parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. This year for campers, every day is a holiday, where each day celebrates something different. Holidays include St. Patrick's Day, Halloween, July 4th and more.

Since MDA’s first camp in 1955, thousands of volunteers from throughout the country have annually helped children with neuromuscular diseases enjoy extraordinary weeks at MDA camp. It’s no different at East Seals Camp Hemlocks in 2011.

Baseball? Got it. Soccer? Yes. Water games? Check. Arts & Crafts? Indeed. This year, every day will be a holiday for campers, as they celebrate July 4th, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day, among others. Camp dances, karaoke, swimming, and scavenger hunts round out the activities campers enjoy during their week at MDA camp.

“MDA summer camp is the week that our kids think about year-round,’’ said Stephen Fredericksen MDA Executive Director. “For one week out of the year, they get to be in an environment where having a neuromuscular disease is the norm, not the exception. They have the chance to experience barrier-free activities and make friendships and memories that last a lifetime.’’

The campers are featured guests in what is a loving and inspirational playground known as MDA camp. Stories are plentiful among the long-standing counselors, medical personnel and the children, who truly are the stars of each week long camp session. They will inspire you. They will amuse and amaze you with their stories of summer camp experiences.

MDA Summer Camp will hold a VIP/Media day on Tuesday, August 9, 2011. This day offers incredible visuals and fun moments involving many notable business and community leaders. Providence Holds Telethon Executive Lock Up

Local business leaders will be heading to “jail” on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 from noon to 3 p.m. at McFadden’s Restaurant in order to raise their “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Community business leaders will be arrested at their place of business and transported to McFadden’s, located at 52 Pine St., Providence, R.I. 02903, to serve their time at the local MDA Lock-Up. The “jailbirds” will be served complimentary “jail” food, while they each attempt to raise at least $2,000 in bail money.

Local “jailbirds” will raise bail money, all of which benefits the fight against neuromuscular disease. This year the local MDA set a goal to raise $40,000 at the event.

During the Lock Up, challenges will be set and prizes will be awarded. Prizes have been donated by Alayne White Spa, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Dave & Buster’s, Newport Playhouse & Cabaret, Scrumptions, Newport Playhouse and Cabaret, Eastside Marketplace, and more.

Rockland County Business Leaders Get "Locked Up" for MDA

Local N.Y. business leaders will be heading to “jail” on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Nyack Seaport to raise their “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Community business leaders will be arrested at their place of business and transported to The Nyack Seaport, located at 21 Burd Street in Nyack NY 10960, to serve their time at the local MDA Lock-Up. Sponsors from Driven Eco, Leros, Majesty Limo Service, On-Time Transport Inc., and Twins Mobility Limousine Services will transport “jailbirds” to the Lock Up.

The “jailbirds” will be served complimentary “jail” food, while they each attempt to raise at least $2,400 in bail money.

Last year, local “jailbirds” raised $85,000 to benefit the fight against neuromuscular disease. This year the local MDA has set a goal to raise $100,000 at the event.

Cranston Local 1363 Extends Support Beyond Rhode Island Statewide Fill the Boot Day

The Cranston Fire Department Local 1363 will hold their own Fill the Boot drive over Labor Day weekend, in addition to participating in the Rhode Island Statewide Fill the Boot day on Saturday, July 30, 2011, to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

All six Cranston stations will collect donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease on Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4, 2011. Their six locations include 131 Park Avenue, 301 Pontiac Avenue, 1384 Cranston Street, 160 Sockanosset Cross Road,1041 Oaklawn Avenue, and 1155 Scituate Avenue.

Last year, Cranston Local 1363 raised $7,700 through their fill the boot efforts.

Brooklyn Business Leaders Get Locked Up for MDA

More than 100 business and civic leaders from throughout the Downtown Brooklyn area will be “arrested” and put “behind bars” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s (MDA) Telethon Executive Lock-Up sponsored by Morton’s The Steakhouse on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Accused of having big hearts and being heavily armed with kindness, the “jailbirds” volunteer to be part of MDA’s Lock-Up in order to raise “bail” by encouraging friends, family, co-workers and business contacts to make contributions to MDA that will directly benefit families in Long Island and the Tri-borough area living with progressive muscle diseases.

Each MDA jailbird’s “bail” is set at $1,000, which will allow him/her to be released for good behavior. The event will take place at Morton’s The Steakhouse, located at 339 Adams Street Brooklyn, NY 11201.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) in Rhode Island will join the fight against neuromuscular disease by holding a statewide Fill the Boot drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Saturday, July 30, 2011.

A media kick off event will be held on Friday, July 29, 2011 at the Warwick Local 2748 Fire House, located at 111 Veterans Memorial Drive, Warwick, R.I. 02886. The event will begin at 11 a.m.

Local 2748 is the highest fundraising local in R.I. Representatives from participating fire departments will also be in attendance at the kick off event.

The following day, fire fighters across the state will be collecting donations for MDA at various locations in Rhode Island. Some of the fire departments involved include Cranston Local 1363, Pawtucket Local 1261, Providence Local 799, Smithfield Local 2050, Johnston Local 1950, North Smithfield Local 3984, and Warwick Local 2748. Connecticut Youngsters With Muscular Dystrophy and Community Volunteers Attend MDA Camp

They are extraordinary people doing extraordinary things. And they run the gamut of everyday people.

From wide-eyed, first-year volunteers to big-hearted professional fire fighters, to expert nurses and doctors, they all come together for one cause: the joy, laughter and dreams of the almost 40 children who annually enjoy Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Summer Camp in Hebron, Conn.

Summer Camp will be held at Easter Seals Camp Hemlocks, located at 85 Jones Street, Hebron, Conn., 06248, from August 7 to August 12, 2011. VIP day will be held on August 9th to recognize volunteers and sponsors who make the week-long session of camp possible.

Since MDA’s first camp in 1955, thousands of volunteers from throughout the country have annually helped children with neuromuscular diseases enjoy extraordinary weeks at MDA camp. It’s no different at East Seals Camp Hemlocks in 2011.

Baseball? Got it. Soccer? Yes. Water games? Check. Arts & Crafts? Indeed. This year, every day will be a holiday for campers, as they celebrate July 4th, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day, among others. Camp dances, karaoke, swimming, and scavenger hunts round out the activities campers enjoy during their week at MDA camp.

Newark Fire Fighters Kick Off Fill the Boot Drive

The Newark Fire Department will kick off their fill the boot drive on August 20, 2011 at the Bergen Street Festival to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and help send children in N.J. to MDA Summer Camp.

Newark fire fighters will collect donations for MDA at various locations throughout the greater Newark area from Monday, August 22 to Friday, August 26, 2011. The fill the boot drive will take place during the morning and afternoons in two shifts and during community events in Newark. Specific times and locations will follow.

In case of inclimate weather, the Newark Fire Department will fill the boot from Tuesday, August 30 to Friday, September 2, 2011.

All of the proceeds will go towards MDA’s services, research programs, and support groups that benefit individuals and families in the local area. Funds help send children fighting against neuromuscular disease to MDA Summer Camp.

MDA N.Y. Summer Camp, located in Spring Valley, N.Y., is a place offering a wide range of activities specially designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs with neuromuscular disease. Camp programs are conducted in a relaxed atmosphere that gives campers an opportunity to develop lifelong friendships, share interests and build self-confidence.

New Haven Telethon Executive Lock Up

Local business leaders will be heading to “jail” on Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Leon’s Restaurant in order to raise their “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Community business leaders will be arrested at their place of business and transported to Leon’s Restaurant, located at 500 Long Wharf Drive, New Haven, Conn 06511, to serve their time at the local MDA Lock-Up. The “jailbirds” will be served complimentary “jail” food, while they each attempt to raise at least $2,400 in bail money.

Last year, local “jailbirds” raised over $36,000 in bail money, all of which went towards the fights against neuromuscular disease. This year the local MDA has set a goal to raise $50,000 at the event.

Steve MacLaughlin, Meteorologist for WTNH, will be the Master of Ceremonies at the event. He hosted the Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy at WPHL in Philadelphia and KXAS in North Texas. MacLaughlin remains active with MDA throughout the year.

The “jailbirds” are asked to spend a minimum of one hour, but encouraged to stay longer. There will be contests and prizes throughout the hour.

This is the second time the New Haven Lock-Up has been designated a Telethon Lock-Up Event. Any donation of $250-$499 will be awarded a Silver Star and any donation of $500 or more will be given a Gold Star. Male Summer Camp Volunteers Needed

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is searching for an additional 25 men to fill their camp counselor roster at MDA Summer Camp in Spring Valley, N.Y.

Volunteers must be interested in helping children enjoy a fun-filled, carefree week at MDA Summer Camp. Locally, MDA Summer Camp takes place August 20-26, 2011 at Vision Center on Blindness.

“MDA summer camp is a special week of the year when children with muscle diseases can enjoy themselves in a true peer group where they are able to participate in a full range outdoor activities adapted to their abilities,” MDA Camp Director, Gloria English said. “Besides being great fun, camp helps youngsters grow and develop emotionally and socially— it’s truly the highlight of the year, for both campers and volunteers.” Volunteering at MDA Summer Camp is a rewarding and life-changing experience. The friendships formed and the memories created will last forever.

English explains, “Every camper is matched with their own volunteer counselor for the week. Fortunately, some men from the area have signed up, but we still need 25 more to complete our camp roster. With over 50 boys with muscle disease expected to attend MDA Summer Camp this August, there is a great need for more male volunteers to be their camp counselors for this very special week.”

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, US Citizens and able to lift and care for a young person between the ages of six and 17. A volunteer counselor will have the opportunity to become a close companion to a camper and help them with daily activities such at eating, bathing and dressing. Counselors will also assist campers with recreational activities such as adapted sports, fishing, swimming and arts and crafts.

Springfield, Mass., August 20, 2010 – On Tuesday, August 24th, Pazzo Ristorante in Springfield, will be hosting the “SPRINGFIELD LOCK UP”. Area business people from the greater Springfield area will be brought to our “mock jail” at Pazzo’s.

Sikorsky Firefighters Turn Up The Heat with their 7th Annual Clambake

New Haven, Conn., August 18, 2010- On Friday, August 20, 2010 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. the Sikorsky Firefighters Local I-68 will be cooking for the crowds in hopes to raise money for the fight against neuromuscular disease.

The Sikorsky firefighters will be hosting their 7th Annual Clambake to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven, Conn. The Sikorsky Firefighters’ Annual Clambake boasts a menu of mussels, clams, steamers, hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta, breads, salads, ribs, chicken, chowder, desserts and an open bar.

The event is open to all adults who would like a night out. The Sikorsky Locals hold this event as a way to thank the community for supporting their MDA campaign. Prizes in the past have included helicopter rides, electronics, sports memorabilia, tickets to Broadway shows or special events, gift packages, weekend getaways and more.

Through the generosity and support of Sikorsky employees, outside contractors, friends and local businesses, the Sikorsky Fire Firefighters were able to raise over $100,000 for MDA over the past nine years. SPRING VALLEY, N.Y., August 17, 2010- Over 70 youth from cities throughout N.Y., N.J., and Conn. will be attending the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s (MDA) annual summer camp for kids at Visions Center on Blindness in Spring Valley, N.Y. from August 21 until August 28, 2010.

MDA’s camp programs offer the unique experience for young people with neuromuscular diseases to participate in a variety of events created to develop friendships, share interests and build self confidence. The camp consists of a week long session featuring typical camp activities adapted for youths between the ages of six and 17 with one of the over 40 neuromuscular diseases. The $800 camper fee is covered entirely by generous support from local corporations, groups and individuals who raise funds to support MDA and so no cost is incurred by the family.

This year, campers will enjoy a myriad of activities throughout the week including swimming, fishing, adaptive sports, scavenger hunts and arts and crafts. The annual VIP Day will take place on Wednesday, August 25. On VIP Day, prospective campers, media and sponsors can visit the camp. Counselors, campers and their families will enjoy a day of food, fun and activities and will get to mingle with other volunteers and sponsors, as well as local fire fighters. Campers will enjoy a Whiffle Ball tournament, arts and crafts, balloon making, face painting, a pipe and drum band, and other fun activities.

“MDA summer camp is the best week of the year when children with neuromuscular disease can enjoy themselves in true peer groups and can participate in full range outdoor activities adapted to their abilities,” MDA Camp Director Gloria English said. “Besides being great fun, camp helps youngsters grow and develop emotionally and socially-it’s truly the highlight of the year, for both campers and volunteers.”

Operation "Fly Out" Begins

CRANSTON, R.I., August 16, 2010 – As many Rhode Islanders are squeezing in late summer vacations, it’s important to remember that neuromuscular diseases don’t take a vacation in stealing away muscle function from more than a million Americans. That’s why Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) constituents meet with U.S. Sen. Jack (D-R.I) on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 while the distinguished legislator is back home in Cranston during the brief August recess break from Washington politics.

The meeting, involving civic and business leaders with first-hand knowledge of the challenges families face because of progressive muscle diseases, is part of MDA’s annual “Fly-Out” campaign, orchestrated in communities across America since travel can be a real challenge for people with severe mobility impairments caused by muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) and related disorders.

This year’s “Fly Out” takes on even greater urgency as Congress considers the SMA Treatment Acceleration Act and the Competitive Bidding Act. Both pieces of legislation are vitally important to people with neuromuscular disorders.

Local representatives of MDA’s extensive ‘grassroots’ organization comprising families served by MDA, volunteers, sponsors and MDA clinic directors, met with Sen. Reed at 3:30 p.m. to urge him to back both pieces of legislation. Across the nation, similar MDA “Fly Out” meetings are being orchestrated with elected officials to take advantage of the August recess by the U.S. House of Representatives.

The SMA Treatment Acceleration Act facilitates collaboration and funding to find a treatment or cure for SMA, the number one genetic killer of children aged two or younger. It would provide federal support for a national SMA Clinical Trials Network, accelerating therapeutic developments. The SMA Treatment Acceleration Act also would provide federal support to expand SMA research, among other things. August is SMA Awareness Month, so the timing of the discussion with Sen. Reed is particularly meaningful to thousands of families served by MDA.

The Competitive Bidding Act would eliminate the flawed competitive bidding program for Medicare’s durable medical equipment services such as wheelchairs, leg braces and hospital beds for at-home care. The current bidding system often forces patients to go to unfamiliar providers and inexperienced/unlicensed providers at a greater cost to Medicare while causing confusion and distress for patients.

Cumberland Rescue Local 2757 to Hold 7th Annual Motorcycle Run to Benefit MDA

Cumberland, R.I., August 9, 2010- On Sunday, August 29, 2010 members of the Cumberland Rescue Local 2725 will be hosting their 7th annual Motorcycle Run to benefit the Greater Rhode Island Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Motorcyclists can register for the event from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Cumberland Public Safety Union Hall at 7 Cray Street, Cumberland, R.I. The ride will begin at 11 a.m. and riders will enjoy a scenic ride finishing back at Cumberland Public Safety Union Hall. A donation of $25 per rider will be donated to MDA. In 2009, this event raised $1,700 for MDA. This year, Cumberland Local 2725 aims to raise $2,000.

Rhode Island Fire Department Announce Statewide Fundraising Goal for MDA

Providence, R.I., August 2, 2010 – On Friday, July 30, 2010, the Rhode Island State Association of Fire Fighters (RISAFF) announced they have set a goal to raise over $272,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) this year.

Representatives from MDA, Goodwill Ambassador Abby Alsfeld, and firefighters from across the state joined RISAFF Vice President Joseph Andriole in showing their dedication to raising as much money as possible for the fight against neuromuscular disease. Fire Departments represented at the conference were Providence Local 799, Pawtucket Local 4421, Smithfield Local 2050, Johnston Local 1950, North Kingstown Local 1651, Smithfield Local 2050, Warwick Local 2748, and West Warwick Local 1104. The Fill-the-Boot drive was kicked off by Goodwill Ambassador Abby Alsfeld, who put the first dollar in a fire boot for MDA.

Fire Departments across the state, as well as the nation, raise money for MDA mainly by taking part in the fill-the-boot campaign, where fire fighters volunteer their time to collect money at local intersections. All of the proceeds raised go towards MDA’s research programs, services, Summer Camp, and support groups which benefit local Rhode Island individuals and families affected by neuromuscular disease. Last year, the state of Rhode Island rose over $220,000 for MDA.

The Minuteman of Dartmouth HOG Chapter 2522 to Hold 16th Annual Ride for Life to Benefit

DARTMOUTH, Mass., August 2, 2010 – The Minuteman of Dartmouth HOG Chapter 2522 will be holding its 16th Annual Ride for Life to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Sunday, September 5, 2010.

Motorcyclists can register for the event from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Seekonk Speedway located at 1710 Fall River Avenue in Seekonk, Mass. Preregistration forms are available at http://www.minutemanhog.com. Registration costs $15 per person and includes a barbecue with hot dogs and hamburgers, music, vendors, and more. All bikes are welcome.

The ride will depart from Seekonk Speedway at 12 p.m. sharp, rain or shine, and end at Minuteman Harley-Davidson on 799 State Road in Dartmouth, Mass. Long Beach Local 287 to Fill-the-Boot For the Second Time This Summer

LONG BEACH, N.Y., July 29, 2010 – The Long Beach Fire Department Local 287 will be filling-the-boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) once again this summer on Saturday, August 21 and Sunday, August 22, 2010. Long Beach firefighters are less than $1,000 away from reaching their 2010 goal to raise $10,000 for MDA!

Long Beach firefighters will be collecting donations for the local families affected with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular diseases from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the intersection of East Park Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard in Long Beach, N.Y. 5th District Firefighters to Hold First Ever Bowl-a-Thon for MDA

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., July 27, 2010 – The 5th district of the New York State Professional Fire Fighters Association (NYSPFFA) will be holding their first ever Bowl-A-Thon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Tuesday, August 10, 2010.

The Bowl-a-Thon will take place at New Roc’n Bowl, located at 33 Lecount Place in New Rochelle, N.Y., from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Proceeds from the event will help send children affected by neuromuscular diseases to MDA Summer Camp, located in Spring Valley, N.Y. Each department will be split into two teams of four and will have a goal of sending one child to MDA Summer Camp. This year, members of the 5th District have set a goal to raise $15,000, which will send three cabins of children to MDA Summer Camp.

WATERBURY, Conn., July 27, 2010 – The Waterbury Fire Department Local 1339 will be holding six more Fill-the-Boot drives in Waterbury, Conn. for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) this summer.

On Friday, July 30, Friday, August 6, and Friday, August 13, 2010, Waterbury firefighters will be collecting donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the Stop-N-Shops on both Chase Avenue and Wolcott Street. New Haven Business Leaders "Locked Up" For Having a Good Heart

New Haven, Conn., July 26, 2010 – Over 150 local business leaders will be heading to “jail” on Thursday, August 5th from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Café Goodfellas in order to raise their “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Community business leaders will be arrested at their place of business and transported to Café Goodfellas, located at 758 State Street in New Haven, to serve their time at the local MDA Lock-Up. At Café Goodfellas, the “jailbirds” will be served complimentary “jail” food while they each attempt to raise at least $3,200 in bail money.

Last year local “jailbirds” raised over $36,000 in bail money, all of which went towards the fight against neuromuscular disease. This year the local MDA has set a goal to raise $63,000 at the event.

This is also the first time the New Haven Lock-Up has been designated a Telethon Lock-Up Event. This is the last lock-up event before the local broadcast of the annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon live from the Mohegan Sun on Monday, September 6th. This means that any donation of $250-$499 will be awarded a Silver Star, any donation of $500 or more will be given a Gold Star. These “stars” will be featured on the live local broadcast by Fox 61.

North Smithfield Fire Department To Hold 6th Annual Ride for Life to Benefit MDA

North Smithfield, R.I., July 26, 2010 – The North Smithfield Fire Department Local 3984 will be holding its 6th annual Ride for Life to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Sunday, August 15, 2010.

Motorcyclists can register for the event and begin the ride at the North Smithfield Fire Station, located at 675 St. Paul Street, at 9:30 a.m. It will cost $20 per bike and $10 per passenger to participate in the ride.

Motorcyclists from all over Rhode Island and New England will then begin the 45 mile ride at 11 a.m. After the ride, participants will enjoy a Barbeque Cookout at Gators Pub, located at the corner of Main Street and Victory Highway in North Smithfield. In the past, this event has raised $2,824 for MDA. This year, the North Smithfield firefighters hope to raise $3,500.

Newport Fire Fighters Local 1080 to Hold 34th Annual Charity Golf Scramble to Benefit MDA

PORTSMOUTH, R.I., July 26, 2010 – The Newport Fire Fighters Local 1080 will be holding its 34th Annual Charity Golf Scramble to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Friday, August 13, 2010.

The tournament will take place at Green Valley Country Club, located on Union Street in Portsmouth, R.I. The event will tee off with a shotgun start at noon. Golfers should arrive no later than 11:30 a.m.

Registration for one golfer costs $125 and registration for a foursome costs $500. Golfers can register as a single, twosome, threesome, or foursome. Teams with less than four players will be filled with Newport Fire Fighters. Registration includes a cookout lunch, ribs and chicken dinner, golf, cart, beer, soda, a gift bag, MDA donations and cash prizes! Prizes will be awarded to the Top Six Finishers, Closest to the Pins, Closest to the Line, Longest Putt, and Worst Team. Attleboro Local 838 and North Attleboro Local 1992 Compete for Grand Prize in 3rd Annual Wing Off for MDA Finals

SEEKONK, Mass., July 26, 2010 – Attleboro Firefighters Local 848 and the North Attleboro Firefighters Local 1992 will be competing for the grand prize in the final round of the 3rd Annual Wing Off for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Tuesday, August 10, 2010. The three-part Wing Off Tournament is sponsored by Bone Yard Barbecue, Attleboro Firefighters Local 848, Seekonk Firefighters Local 1931, North Attleboro Firefighters Local 1992 and Plainville Firefighters Local 3415.

The Wing Off Finals will take place at Bone Yard Barbecue, located at 540 Central Ave. in Seekonk, Mass., on August 10, 2010 at 7 p.m. The team who can eat the most wings wins the tournament. There will also be a furniture raffle and TV raffle to raise additional money. Tickets are available at all Fire Department Headquarters in Attleboro, North Attleboro, Seekonk and Plainville, Mass. Furniture raffle tickets will cost $10 each or six for $50. TV raffle tickets cost $5 each or six for $20. The money raised from the Wing-Off will go to assist 500 families in Bristol County and Rhode Island. This year, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) hopes to raise $8,000 for MDA.

This is the IAFF’s 56th year dedicating their time and efforts to the MDA. Since 1954 they have raised nearly $275 million dollars for the organization. They are the largest national sponsor of MDA and pride themselves on their devotion to the cause.

Rockland County Business Leaders Being Sent to Jail for a Good Cause

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y., July 26, 2010 – Over 100 local business leaders will be heading to “jail” on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 from 11 a.m. until 3p.m. at Black Bear Nyack in order to raise their “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Community business leaders will be arrested at their place of business and transported to Black Bear Nyack, located at 82 Main Street, to serve their time at the local MDA Lock-Up. At Black Bear Nyack, the “jailbirds” will be served complimentary “jail” food while they each attempt to raise at least $2,400 in bail money.

Leros Point to Point, Mex Limo & Car Service, Majesty Limo & Car Service, On Time Transport Inc., and Twin’s Mobility Limo Service will be kindly volunteering their time and services to transport participants to and from the event. Last year local “jailbirds” raised $50,000 in bail money, all of which went towards the fight against neuromuscular disease. This year the local MDA has set a goal to raise $75,000 at the event.

Several repeat offenders will be returning to “jail” to serve more time this year, including last year’s top “jailbird,” Joseph Sarvis, who raised $3,000. Lifetime Offender Awards will be given to Philip Roventini, PC, who has raised close to $10,000 over the last 10 years, and Gina Pieroni, who has raised over $4,000 for MDA. We are excited to also have the Mayor of Spring Valley, Mayor Jasmine Norami support our efforts and be locked up for a good cause!

NALC Branch 387 to Have Third Annual Softball Tournament and Picnic to Benefit MDA

Yonkers, N.Y., July 23, 2010 – The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 387 will have its third annual Co-Ed Softball Tournament and Picnic to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Sunday, August 1, 2010.

The tournament and picnic will be held at Redmond/Cook Field at 207 Cook Avenue in Yonkers, N.Y. from 9 a.m. until dusk. Participants will not only enjoy a fun day of softball, but also a day full of food, fun, and entertainment. Raffle tickets for a variety of prizes will also be sold at the tournament for some wonderful prizes. Children are encouraged to attend and enjoy the fun! The Yonkers Fire Department will be on the scene to provide attendees with entertainment and to join in on the fun as well.
The NALC has set a goal to raise $6,000 this year for the fight against neuromuscular disease. The money raised will allow the local MDA to support families in the surrounding area by providing medical services, support groups, and assistance in purchasing orthopedic equipment and repairs.

G.H. Berlin Oil Company to Hold 14th Annual Golf Classic to Benefit MDA

MANCHESTER, Conn., July 20, 2010 – G.H. Berlin Oil Company will be holding their 14th annual Golf Classic to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Tuesday, July 27, 2010.

The tournament will take place at Manchester Country Club, located at 305 South Main Street in Manchester, Conn. The event will tee off at 1 p.m. and run until 5:30 p.m. The tournament consists of an 18-hole round and will be followed by dinner, a silent auction and Chinese raffle. Since its inception, the tournament has raised an excess of $250,000. G.H. Berlin has set a goal to raise over $25,000 for MDA at this year’s tournament.

This year, the tournament will be held in memory of Rick Booth, one of the co-owners of G.H. Berlin who passed away last winter. The annual tournament will be renamed the “Rick Booth Memorial Golf Classic” in his honor.

MDA Honors East Hartford College Student with Top Achievement Award for Connecticut

TUCSON, Ariz., July 20, 2010 – The Muscular Dystrophy Association has named Kristin Duquette of East Hartford the recipient of its 2010 Robert Ross Personal Achievement Award for Connecticut.

Duquette, 19, was selected for MDA’s highest achievement award in Connecticut for her outstanding work on behalf of others with disabilities and her determination to excel in the face of personal challenges.

Duquette has facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, which causes weakness and wasting of the muscles around the eyes and mouth, shoulders, upper arms and lower legs. She is ambulatory, but also sometimes uses a wheeled walker or manual wheelchair.

An accomplished swimmer, Duquette has broken three junior national Paralympic records and is the only person in the country with her disability classification to complete the 200-meter backstroke. Her time in the 50-meter backstroke has her world-ranked. A student at Wheaton College, she hopes to qualify for the U.S. Paralympic team for the 2012 Paralympics in London.

Duquette also is an accomplished violinist and public speaker. She has made many presentations to raise awareness of disability issues in communities and schools across Connecticut.

“I’m very pleased to recognize Kristin Duquette as Connecticut’s Robert Ross MDA Personal Achievement Award recipient for 2010,” said MDA President & CEO Gerald C. Weinberg. “Her accomplishments are a tribute to the East Hartford community, and an example of the kind of leadership MDA is proud to support.”

Duquette will accept the award during the local broadcast of the 2010 Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon on September 6 on Fox61 at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn.

Duquette was selected as Connecticut’s state recipient after having been selected for a local achievement award by MDA’s Northern Connecticut Chapter.

One person will be selected from among all the state honorees around the country and named MDA’s national 2011 Robert Ross Personal Achievement Award recipient. The national award recipient will be announced on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, broadcast Sept. 5-6.

The award is named in memory of Robert Ross, MDA’s longtime chief executive who died in 2006. Ross created the Personal Achievement Award program in 1992 to recognize the exemplary accomplishments and community service of people who have any of the 40-plus neuromuscular diseases for which MDA seeks treatments and cures.

John Quinlan, a medical doctor from Lakeside Park, Ky., is MDA’s 2010 national award recipient. Quinlan, who has facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, also is director of the MDA clinic at the University of Cincinnati.

Stratford firefighters will be collecting donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease at the Stratford Fire Station on Main Street and Barnum Avenue from 10 AM until 3 PM. A&P Charity Golf Classic Raises a Record-Breaking $425,000 for MDA

Far Hills, N.J., July 19, 2010 – Almost 450 golfers participated in The A&P Family of Supermarkets’ 15th Annual Charity Golf Classic, held at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club in Far Hills, NJ, to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Monday, July 12, 2010.

This year’s A&P Golf Classic raised a record breaking $425,000 for the fight against neuromuscular disease. Considered the largest golf tournament in the country to benefit MDA, the A&P Charity Golf Classic has raised over $4 million in the past fifteen years. A&P also hosts a day of activities at MDA Summer Camp in Spring Valley, N.Y. A&P believes that the best way to be a good neighbor is to give back to the communities they serve. Kelly's Kone Konnection of Hamden, Conn. Names Flavors for MDA

Hamden, Conn., July 16, 2010 - Kelly Stone of Kelly's Kone Konnection, located at 2583 Whitney Avenue, Hamden, Conn., has generously named two ice cream flavors for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to help promote the 2010 Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. This is the third consecutive year that Kelly’s Kone Konnection has named a flavor for MDA.

Bridgeport Local 834 to Fill-the-Boot for MDA Four Times This Summer

Bridgeport, Conn., July 15, 2010 – The Bridgeport Fire Department Local 843 will be filling-the-boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) this summer for the first time since 2008. The first of Bridgeport’s four fill-the-boot drives will be held this Saturday, July 17, 2010.

Bridgeport firefighters will be collecting donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease throughout the city at intersections near each of the eight Bridgeport Fire Houses on Saturday, July 17, Saturday, July 24, Saturday, July 31, and Saturday, August 14, 2010. Governor M. Jodi Rell Declares Proclamation for "International Association of Fire Fighters and Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer of 2010"

Hamden, Conn., July 15, 2010 – Governor M. Jodi Rell has issued a proclamation for the State of Connecticut declaring that the Summer of 2010 be known as “International Association of Fire Fighters and Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer.” The proclamation acknowledges the hard work and dedication of Connecticut firefighters, especially considering their loyalty to raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Connecticut’s firefighters raised over $469,000 in 2009.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is the largest national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In 2009, firefighters across America led by IAFF members raised over $22,737,000 to aid in the fight against neuromuscular disease.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association has been in a partnership with the International Association of Fire Fighters for the past 56 years. Volunteers Needed For 2010 Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon

Garden City, N.Y., July 13, 2010 – The Long Island office of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is looking for people interested in volunteering at the local 2010 Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon Pledge Center on Sunday, September 5 and Monday, September 6, 2010. The pledge center is located at the Ruth S. Harley University Center of Adelphi University at 1 South Avenue in Garden City, N.Y.

A vital component of the Telethon is the satellite pledge center that takes the majority of the incoming calls from donors who live throughout Long Island and the Tri-borough area. Volunteers will be needed during the Telethon to help answer phone and prepare mailings beginning on Sunday evening, September 5, 2010 from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. On Monday, September 6, 2010, volunteers are needed from noon to 4 p.m. and 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Since the funds raised at the local Telethon benefit families across New York, MDA will be looking for volunteers from all New York counties. This is a great opportunity for community members to not only help out those affected by neuromuscular disease, but also to be a part of the nationally known Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon.

FAR HILLS, N.J., July 1, 2010 – On Monday, July 12, 2010, the A&P Family of Supermarkets will be hosting the 15th Annual Charity Golf Classic to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Rhode Island Firefighters to Announce Statewide Fundraising Goal for MDA

Providence, R.I., June 30, 2009 – The Rhode Island State Association of Fire Fighters will be holding a press conference on Friday, July 30, 2010 at 11 a.m. on the Lawn of the State House in Providence to announce their fundraising goal for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

The press conference will not only be held to announce the fire fighters fundraising goal, but also to show their commitment to the fight against neuromuscular disease. Joseph Andriole, Vice President of the Rhode Island State Association of Fire Fighters, will be running the press conference.

Fire Departments across the state, as well as the nation, raise money for MDA mainly by taking part in the fill-the-boot campaign, where fire fighters volunteer their time to collect money at local intersections. ERA Castelo Real Estate Group to Hold Annual Picnic Fundraiser for MDA

SOUTH DARTMOUTH, Mass., June 30, 2010– The ERA Castelo Real Estate Group will be holding its annual Picnic Fundraiser to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Sunday, July 18, 2010 from noon to 6 p.m.

Local Support Sends Youth to MDA Summer Camp

NEW HAVEN, Conn., June 30, 2010- Over 30 youth from cities throughout Conn. will be attending the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s (MDA) annual summer camp for kids at Camp Hemlocks in Hebron, Conn from July 11 until July 16.

MDA's camp programs offer the unique experience for young people with neuromuscular diseases to participate in a variety of events created to develop friendships, share interests and build self confidence. The camp consists of a week long session featuring typical camp activities adapted for youths between the ages of six and 17 with one of the over 40 neuromuscular diseases. The camper fee is covered entirely by generous support from local corporations, groups and individuals who raise funds to support MDA no cost is incurred by the family.

This year, campers will enjoy a myriad of activities throughout the week including archery, swimming, fishing, a climbing wall, and arts and crafts. Highlights of the week include a Magic Show, donated by a R.I. MDA family, a Harley Bike Show, sponsored by Harley Davidson’s New London HOG chapter, a scavenger hunt, movie night, carnival games and motorcycle rides.

The annual VIP Day will take place on Wednesday, July 14. On VIP Day, parents, prospective campers, media and sponsors can visit the camp. There is also a camp-wide carnival with special activities and a number of booths run by sponsors. Michael John of Long Island Sound will host a DJ booth where campers can learn how to DJ. There will also be a photography booth, hosted by Robert Jones of Robert Jones LLC, and a Nintendo Wii booth, hosted by the Hospital for Special Care. Campers will have the opportunity to explore an antique fire truck, provided by Bob Carlson and the Wallingford Fire Department. Campers can also participate in a team Wheelchair Derby Relay Race, sponsored by Joseph Michalak of Genzyme Therapeutics and Elizabeth Vernon of Athena Diagnostics. VIP Day will conclude with a Silent Auction event where campers use their “MDA Dollars” to bid on auction items. Campers can collect “MDA Dollars” from sponsors during VIP day festivities.

“MDA summer camp is a special week of the year when children with muscular dystrophy can enjoy themselves in true peer group and can participate in full range outdoor activities adapted to their abilities,” MDA Camp Director Jennifer Dain said. “Besides being great fun, camp helps youngsters grow and develop emotionally and socially-it’s truly the highlight of the year, for both campers and volunteers.”

Camp Hemlocks has been a longtime host of the MDA summer camp. Camp Hemlocks is located on 160 acres in Hebron, Conn. (just 25 minutes from Hartford). The camp overlooks Jones Pond and borders the Salmon River Forest.

West Point Local F-7 To Hold First Ever Golf Tournament for MDA

West Point, N.Y., June 29, 2010 – The West Point Fire Department Local F-7 will be holding their first ever golf tournament to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Monday, July 19, 2010.

The tournament will take place at West Point Golf Club, located on Route 9 West in West Point, N.Y. The event will tee off at 9 a.m. and run until 7 p.m. The tournament will be followed by dinner and an award ceremony.

Registration for one golfer costs $110 and registration for a foursome costs $440. Proceeds benefit numerous local families in the tri-state area who are served by MDA. The West Point Local F-7 has set a goal to raise $5,000 at this event.

Local East Rutherford Business Leaders Get "Locked Up" to Fight Muscular Dystrophy

Maywood, N.J., June 28, 2010 – Across the country, thousands of law abiding citizens are going “behind bars for good” to help MDA on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Park & Orchard Restaurant at 240 Hackensack St. in East Rutherford, N.J. Local business owners of East Rutherford, Rutherford, Lyndhurst, Moonachie, Carlstadt, and Teterboro, N.J. are once again helping out the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) by participating in MDA’s annual Lock Up program.

Here and throughout the country, thousands of “jailbirds” will get locked up and try to post bail by raising money through their colleagues, friends, and family. The Lock Up program is MDA’s number one fundraising program getting local business leaders involved.

MDA’s Lock Up program directly helps local families affected by diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). The money “jailbirds” raise helps to support MDA’s worldwide research programs, as well as MDA’s national network of 225 hospital-affiliated clinics, including the clinic at UMDNJ. “Jailbirds” bail money also helps send children with muscular dystrophy in Northern New Jersey to barrier-free MDA summer camp at Visions Vacation Camp in Spring Valley, N.Y.

Last year, the Lock Up in East Rutherford raised over $30,000, joining other cities around the country in supporting the popular annual tradition. This year, the goal has been increased to $60,000!

Torrington Lock-Up Raises Nearly $29,000 for MDA

Hartford, Conn., June 23, 2010 – The Hartford Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) held their annual Hartford Executive Lock-Up on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Cambridge House in Torrington.

Business leaders from Torrington, Winsted and New Hartford were arrested at their place of business and transported to Cambridge House, located at 84 Main Street in Torrington, to serve time at the local MDA Lock-Up. During their incarceration, “jailbirds” enjoyed complimentary “jail” food while they called friends and family to help them make “bail.” The “jailbirds” were recruited prior to the event and were encouraged to pre-raise “bail” in the weeks leading up to the Lock-Up. Individual participants raised an average bail of $473. This year the local MDA raised nearly $29,000 at the Lock Up. All of the proceeds will support MDA and the fight against neuromuscular disease.

Sven Holmgren from Viking Remodeling was the highest-collecting “jailbird,” raising $3,110 and counting! Other top “jaibirds” included Rich Ducci of Ducci Electric who raised $3, 035, Althea “Candy” Perez who raised $2,490, Reverand Jackie Hall from Winchester Center who raised $1,384, and Carol Monroe from Northwest Commmunity Bank who raised $1,087. Montville Firefighters Host Poker Run to Benefit MDA

Montville, Conn., June 22, 2010 – The Montville Firefighters Local 3386 will hold a Poker Run on Saturday, July 17, 2010 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Motorcyclists can register for the event and begin the ride at Brown Derby on Route 32 in Montville, Conn. Registration will cost $25 per bike and $5 per rider. There will be food for purchase, a cash bar, live music by Thrust and raffles. For those who don’t ride, all are welcome to come for the food band and raffles. A donation of $5 per person will be collected.

The poker run will kick off with a shot gun start at Brown Derby at 11:30 a.m. The stops include Brookside Café in Preston, Conn., Sunset Ribs in Waterford, Conn., Smokey O’Gradys in East Lyme, Conn., Stash’s in New London, Conn. The poker run will end at the Brown Derby in Montville at 4 p.m.

The event is called a poker run because participants will be able to draw one playing card at each of the five stops. At the finish line, riders will receive their fifth card and can purchase an additional card for $5 each after receiving their last card, however only five cards per rider can be played. The person with the best hand after the ride will win a cash prize.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the Montville Fire Department’s Fill-the-Boot campaign, which supports the fight against neuromuscular disease.

Woodbridge Professional Firefighters Burned the Roof Raising Funds for MDA

Woodbridge, N.J., June 21, 2010 – The Woodbridge Township Fire Department Local 290 held a Bowl-A-Thon Fundraiser at the Woodbridge Bowling Center on Saturday, June 12, 2010 to benefit local families served by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in Central N.J.

Over 20 firefighters and their friends and family came to bowl for a great cause, raising over $5,000 for the Association. MDA N.J. Goodwill Ambassador and local Fords, N.J. resident, Sierra Acevedo, was there to show her support and cheer on the bowlers.

Watertown Fire Department to Hold Fill-the-Boot Drive for MDA

WATERTOWN, Conn., June 19, 2010 – The Watertown Fire Department will be filling-the-boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Friday, June 25 and Saturday, June 26, 2010.

On Friday, June 25, Watertown firefighters will be collecting donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the intersection of Route 262 and Buckingham Road. On Saturday, June 26, firefighters will be filling-the-boot from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at various locations on Main Street in Watertown and Oakville. Area Junior Goodwill Ambassador T.J. MacClean will be at the Watertown Fire Department on Saturday to greet the fire fighters as they return after the Boot Drive. Tinton Falls, N.J., June 19, 2010 – On Wednesday, June 16, 2010, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) hosted a cocktail reception to kick off the 15th annual Phil Villapiano Field of Hope Gala at 7 p.m. at Nauvoo Grill Club in Fair Haven, N.J.

The Phil Villapiano Field of Hope Gala is an annual black tie event that aims to raise money to benefit MDA’s ALS research program while also helping to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Last year, the Gala raised nearly $150,000 for MDA.

Attendees at the reception included committee members, current sponsors and past honorees. The 2010 Lou Gehrig Humanitarian Award recipients, Warren Diamond and Stacey Cooper, were also in attendance.

The three fire districts of the West Haven Fire Department will be washing cars and collecting donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease at three different locations in West Haven from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. including the Steven Heights Fire Station at 99 Meloy Road, the Dawson Avenue Fire Station at 860 Ocean Avenue and Dadds Xtreme Indoor Sports at 867 Boston Post Road. The West Haven Local 1198 is aiming to raise $5,000 at this event. Englewood Local 3260 Will Fill-the-Boot for MDA from June 15-18

ENGLEWOOD, N.J., June 15, 2010 – The Englewood Fire Department Local 3260 will be filling-the-boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) this summer from Tuesday, June 15, 2010 to Friday, June 18, 2010.

Englewood firefighters will be collecting donations for the fight against neuromuscular disease at major intersections in Englewood, including the intersection of Dean Street and East Palisades Avenue. Fire fighters will be filling-the-boot from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All of the proceeds will go towards MDA’s services, research programs, and support groups that benefit individuals and families in the local area. They have set a goal of $8,000 but Union President Pat Florio is confident they can hit $10,000.

UPFFA Holds Press Conference to Announce 2010 Statewide Goal and Kick Off Annual Fill-the-Boot Campaign for MDA

West Hartford, Conn., June 15, 2010- On Tuesday, June 15, 2010 the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Conn. (UPFFA) in conjunction with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), held a Fill-the-Boot kick-off press conference at the West Hartford Local 1241 Fire Headquarters Engine Company 2 in West Hartford, Conn., to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and the fight against neuromuscular disease in the state of Conn.

The press conference was conducted by the president of the UPFFA, Peter Carozza, Jr., and hosted by West Hartford Local 1241. Other locals in attendance included the New Haven Local 825, Waterbury Local 1339, New Britain Local 992, Guilford Local 4177 and Bridgeport Local 834.

Local Goodwill Ambassador, 4-year-old T.J. McClean, made an appearance at the event. T.J. had the opportunity to meet the fire fighters and receive a tour of the West Hartford Fire House.

Each year Conn. fire fighters of the IAFF raise funds for MDA in many ways, including their trademark Fill-the-Boot program. Last year, the IAFF fire fighters in Conn. raised $483,000 for MDA. This year, Conn. locals have set a goal to raise $558,000 for MDA. “We are making a special appeal to every citizen in our state to donate at least $1 and this $1 will help us reach our goal,” said Peter Carozza, president of the UPFFA, “Help us help the kids of our state.”

The IAFF is the largest national sponsor of the MDA. In 2009, fire fighters across the country collectively raised over $28,000,000 to support the fight against neuromuscular disease. 2010 marks the 56th year that the IAFF has proudly dedicated their time and efforts to MDA. NEW HAVEN, Conn., June 14, 2010 – On Monday, June 14, 2010, Aarons Sales and Lease Ownership in West Haven, Conn. presented the West Haven Fire Department Local 1198 witha check for $500 to kick off the West Haven Fire Department’s annual fill-the-boot drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

The check presentation took place at 10:30 a.m. at Aarons Sales and Lease Ownership which is located at 480 Elm Street in West Haven, Conn. Last year, the West Haven Fire Department raised $17,300 for the fight against neuromuscular disease. This year, the West Haven Fire Department plans to raise $18,000 for MDA. All the proceeds raised from the fill-the-boot drive will go towards MDA’s services, research programs and support groups which benefit local individuals and families affected by neuromuscular disease.

Local Torrington Business Leaders Get "Locked Up" To Fight Muscular Dystrophy

Hartford, Conn., June 11, 2010 – Local business leaders from Torrington, Winsted, and New Hartford will be heading to “jail” on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Cambridge House in order to raise their “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Community business leaders will be arrested at their place of business and transported to Cambridge House, located at 84 Main Street in Torrington, to serve their time at the local MDA Lock-Up. At Cambridge House the “jailbirds” will be served complimentary “jail” food while they each attempt to raise their bail money for MDA. In past years, the Torrington Lock Up has raised over $45,000. This year the local MDA has set a bail goal of $2,400 for each participant. All proceeds will go towards the fight against neuromuscular disease.

2nd Annual Bear & Bison Pow Wow to Benefit MDA

Brooklyn, Conn., June 11, 2010 – Kevin “Bear” Travers along with a group of fellow Native Americans will hold the second annual Bear & Bison Pow Wow to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The event will be held at Creamery Brook Bison Farm in Brooklyn, Conn. on Saturday, June 19, 2010 and Sunday, June 20, 2010.

The gates to the farm will open at 10 a.m., rain or shine, and close at 5 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the entrance at $5 for adults age 16 and older and $3 for seniors age 55 and older. Tickets are free for children under 16 who are accompanied by an adult. MDA will receive $3 from every ticket that is sold.

At noon on Saturday, June 19, 2010, a Grand Entry of all of the attending nations will officially begin the Pow Wow. Attendees will be able to participate in Native American dancing, singing, and craft making, as well as buy Native American crafts and traditional food. Throughout the weekend, attendees will be entertained by three Native American Drum Groups as well as New York State’s Minham Singers. The farm is a working buffalo farm so there are no pets allowed. The farm will also be selling their homemade ice cream all weekend and visitors are welcome to browse the country store.

Parking is free and primitive camping will also be allowed, for free, if the attendees choose to camp overnight at the event. Vendor space is also available for anyone who is interested.

Local Business Leaders Being Sent To Jail For A Good Cause

Providence, R.I., June 9, 2010 – Over 200 local business leaders will be heading to “jail” on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at McFadden’s Restaurant & Saloon in order to raise their “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Community business leaders will be arrested at their place of business and transported to McFadden’s, located at 52 Pine Street, to serve their time at the local MDA Lock-Up. At McFadden’s, the “jailbirds” will be served complimentary “jail” food while they each attempt to raise at least $2,000 in bail money.

The Rhode Island State Police, the Providence Police Department, Sentinel Limo, Angel Limo, and Professional Security Services will be kindly volunteering their time and services to transport participants to and from the event. Last year local “jailbirds” raised $55,000 in bail money, all of which went towards the fight against neuromuscular disease. This year the local MDA has set the same goal of raising $55,000 at the event.

Visions of Hope Event Raises Over $98,000 for MDA

Tinton Falls, N.J., June 9, 2010 – The third annual Visions of Hope Event, held at the beautiful Addison Park, located in Aberdeen, N.J., was certainly a night to remember, raising over $98,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
On the evening of Monday, June 7, 2010, over 300 people attended the third annual Visions of Hope Event, an extraordinary evening of food, art and fashion to benefit MDA of Central N.J. and Staten Island services and summer camp initiatives. Guests had the opportunity to sample foods and desserts prepared by some of N.J.’s finest chefs, with more than 15 different restaurants as well as a selection of wine and spirits. Restaurant and Wine/Spirits Sponsors included Abbate Bakery, Addison Park, Anna’s Italian Kitchen, Ciccone’s Italian Deli, CJ Montana’s, CMSC Spirits, DeMarco’s Catering and Gourmet Deli, Ganga Asian Bistro, Grape Beginnings Wine School, JTE Spirits, Julia’s Restaurant, Kicky’s Restaurant, La Cashina, McDonagh’s Pub, Peter’s Fishery, Pizzuto’s Ravioli, Ocean Wine & Spirits, Scarborough Fair, and Suzi’s Sweet Shoppe. The night also included an upscale silent auction and fashion show, featuring the designs of Ivory & Co., Staten Island and Jos. A. Committee member Carol Stillwell raised an astonishing $58,000 during the live campership auction, which will help send children to MDA Summer Camp, located at Camp Visions in Spring Valley, N.Y. Camp Visions is a completely handicap accessible camp provided free of charge to children ages 6 - 17 who are served by MDA. For one week each summer, children enjoy a myriad of activities such as swimming, fishing, sports, talent shows and more. Children are paired with a volunteer counselor who assists them and provides companionship for the entire week.

Visions of Hope Committee Chairman Carmine S. Visone, owner of Home Away From Home Academy, and Meteorologist James Gregorio of News 12 New Jersey presented two awards during the evening. This year’s Humanitarian of the Year award was presented to actor and comedian Joe Piscopo, who has devoted much of his time to non-profits in addition to starting his own foundation, “The Positive Impact Foundation,” which creates positive media for at-risk youths. The Visions of Hope Award was presented to Honorable Louis F. Locascio, J.S.C., Ret, former judge for the Superior Court of N.J. and now of counsel to Gold, Albanese & Barletti, who has been active in his local community, mentoring young lawyers, counseling high school students considering law as a career, and presiding as judge over N.J. Mock Trial competitions in Monmouth County and State Finals. In addition, he was an Award Recipient for the Maria Frangella Foundation for Colon Cancer Research for dedication and commitment to Stars and Dreams for a Cure.

Seekonk, Attleboro, North Attleboro, and Plainville Fire Departments to Compete in Wing Off for Muscular Dystrophy

Providence, R.I., June 7, 2010 – The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) during a three-part Wing Off Tournament between Seekonk Fire Department Local 1931, Attleboro Fire Department Local 848, North Attleboro Fire Department Local 1992 and Plainville Fire Department Local 3415.

The Wing Off Tournament will take place at Bone Yard Barbecue which is located at 540 Central Ave. in Seekonk, Mass. on June 8, 2010, June 22, 2010 and August 10, 2020 at 7 p.m. The team who can eat the most wings (in weight) wins. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a raffle. In the past, this event has raised around $2,000. This year, the IAFF hopes to raise $8,000.

MDA Seeks Volunteers for 2010 Summer Camp

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. - The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is searching for people who are looking for a rewarding and memorable experience this summer to join their summer camp. Volunteer counselors are needed to assist young people with neuromuscular diseases and help them enjoy a fun-filled week at MDA summer camp, which will take place from Aug. 21, 2010 to Aug. 28, 2010 at Visions Camp in Spring Valley, N.Y. With less than 100 days until camp begins we need volunteers to sign up now!

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and able to lift and care for a young person between the ages of six and 17. As a volunteer counselor, one will have the opportunity to become a close companion to a camper affected by neuromuscular disease and help them with daily activities such at eating, bathing and dressing. Counselors will also assist campers with recreational activities such as arts and crafts, swimming, and adapted sports.

“MDA summer camp is a special week of the year when children with neuromuscular disease can enjoy themselves in true peer group and can participate in full range outdoor activities adapted to their abilities,” MDA Camp Director, Gloria English said. “Besides being great fun, camp helps youngsters grow and develop emotionally and socially— it’s truly the highlight of the year, for both campers and volunteers.”

MDA Opens New Pediatric Clinic at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital

New Haven, Conn., June 3, 2010 – The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is pleased to announce the opening of an outpatient pediatric clinic at One Long Wharf, New Haven, Conn. to serve people in Southern Conn. who have any of the over 40 diseases in MDA’s program.

The MDA-sponsored clinic Yale- New Haven Children’s Hospital and the Physicians of Yale Medical Group will offer diagnostic and follow-up care for muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Leo Gehrig’s disease) and other muscle-wasting diseases.

The MDA-sponsored clinic held its grand opening on May 5, 2010 and will see patients by appointment on the first Wednesday of each month.

Services at the MDA clinic will be provided by pediatric neurologist, pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, pulmonologist, physical and occupational therapists and genetics consultant. The clinic will also offer access to such services as speech and language pathology and social services consultations, as well as to other health specialists skilled in the medical management of these diseases, including cardiology.

The new MDA-sponsored clinic will be co-directed by Board Certified Orthopeadic Surgeon Dr. Brian G. Smith, M.D.; and Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology Dr. Geoffrey Miller, M.D.; and Sumit Bhargava, M.D. Pediatric Pulmonologist and certified sleep specialist, as well as nurse coordinator Louise Lanouette, R.N.

“The MDA-sponsored pediatric clinic at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital will enhance MDA;s delivery of important health care services to adults and children with muscle diseases in our community,” Said Lauren Joyce, Executive Director of MDA’s Southeast Conn. Chapter, “In addition to top-rated medical services through MDA clinics, MDA’s local office also offers support groups, summer camps for youngsters, assistance with repairing durable medical equipment and much more. 2nd Annual "A Day At The Races" To Benefit MDA

Elmont, N.Y., June 3, 2010 – Several area businesses and organizations will join together for the second annual “A Day at the Races” event at the Belmont Race Track in Elmont, N.Y. on June 18, 2010 from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. to raise funds for the 2010 Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Summer Camp program.

The event will recognize participating businesses and organizations for raising money to send children to MDA Summer Camp at a cocktail party and awards ceremony with a silent auction. MDA’s Summer Camp, located in Spring Valley, N.Y., provides children who are living with a neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime.

It costs $800 for one child to attend the camp and sponsorships for this event range from $1,600 to $10,000. A $10,000 sponsor will have the opportunity to name a race and have their picture taken in the winner’s circle. Last year, the event raised $50,000, which helped send over 60 children to camp. This year, MDA has set a goal to raise at least $80,000. It is through fundraising events such as this, and the generous efforts of participants, that MDA is able to send children from the N.Y. metro area to Summer Camp for free.

Artist Charles Fazzino and The Food Emporium Donate Proceeds from Special Edition Bag to MDA

New Haven, Conn., June 2, 2010 – The Food Emporium will be donating a portion of the proceeds from a special edition reusable shopping bag, featuring the work of renowned 3-D pop artist Charles Fazzino to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The reusable, eco-friendly bag will display his painting “Fazzino’s Fabulous NY Apple” and is the first in a series of limited edition collectible bags featuring artwork from some of the world’s most talented artists and designers.

Artist Charles Fazzino is dedicated to many social causes, with a special interest in those involving children. In the last ten years alone he has raised over one million dollars with his artwork for these causes. He is a National Vice President for MDA, has acted as the official artist for the N.Y. Chapters Muscle Team Gala seven times and has visited MDA Summer Camp.

A&P Supermarkets Presents Check to Muscular Dystrophy Association

Pompton Plains, N.J., June 1, 2010 – On Thursday, May 20, 2010, CEO and President of A&P Family Supermarkets Ron Marshall presented the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) with a check for over $332,000 representing the proceeds from their recent “Shamrocks Against Dystrophy” Fund.

The check was presented as part of a grand reopening of the Pompton Plains A&P located at 500 Route 23 North. It has been closed since March due to flooding. In addition to raising money for MDA, funds were also raised for the Community Food Bank of N.J. and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

MDA is a national voluntary health agency working to defeat muscular dystrophy and related diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching professional and public health education. MDA also supports nearly 400 research projects around the world and sponsors 220 hospital-affiliated clinics.
