Montville Firefighters Host Poker Run to Benefit MDA

Montville, Conn., June 22, 2010 – The Montville Firefighters Local 3386 will hold a Poker Run on Saturday, July 17, 2010 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Motorcyclists can register for the event and begin the ride at Brown Derby on Route 32 in Montville, Conn. Registration will cost $25 per bike and $5 per rider. There will be food for purchase, a cash bar, live music by Thrust and raffles. For those who don’t ride, all are welcome to come for the food band and raffles. A donation of $5 per person will be collected.

The poker run will kick off with a shot gun start at Brown Derby at 11:30 a.m. The stops include Brookside Café in Preston, Conn., Sunset Ribs in Waterford, Conn., Smokey O’Gradys in East Lyme, Conn., Stash’s in New London, Conn. The poker run will end at the Brown Derby in Montville at 4 p.m.

The event is called a poker run because participants will be able to draw one playing card at each of the five stops. At the finish line, riders will receive their fifth card and can purchase an additional card for $5 each after receiving their last card, however only five cards per rider can be played. The person with the best hand after the ride will win a cash prize.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the Montville Fire Department’s Fill-the-Boot campaign, which supports the fight against neuromuscular disease.

The Montville Fire Department Local 3386 is part of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). This is the IAFF’s 56th year dedicating their time and efforts to the MDA. Since 1954 they have raised nearly $275 million for the organization. They are the largest national sponsor of the MDA and pride themselves on their devotion to the cause.

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education. The majority of contributions to MDA come from individual donors.
